Wooden Religious Sculpture, "Heilige Barbara"
A traditional devotional sculpture of Saint Barbara, executed in hand-carved polychrome wood. The base bears the hand-painted inscription "H. BARBARA" (Heilige Barbara), confirming its provenance from a Dutch-speaking region (likely Belgium or the Netherlands). The figure’s idealized, soft facial features, modest gaze, and heavy, flowing robes are characteristic of the "Saint Sulpice" style (named after the Parisian district). This sentimental, Neo-Gothic style dominated Western European church art from the mid-19th to early 20th century.
A historically rich piece of religious folk art, ideal for bringing a sense of age and narrative to a curated interior. Saint Barbara is historically revered as the patron saint of architects, miners, and protection against sudden death.
Fair antique condition. The piece displays significant signs of age, including paint loss, craquelure, and wear to the wood, particularly on the base and hands. The right hand likely originally held a palm frond, the symbol of victory over dead, which is no longer present.
