Modular Two-Panel Pendant Lamp in Murano Glass and Brass, Carlo Nason for Kalmar, 1970s.
This high-end pendant light is a striking example of Mid-Century Modern design, designed by Carlo Nason for the Austrian firm Kalmar in the 1970s.
The fixture showcases a remarkable two-tone effect, achieved with two substantial panels of hand-blown Murano glass. The glass features the characteristic textured finish, with a frosted or opaque top that transitions smoothly into a clear bottom section. Nason (b. 1935), a key figure in the period's avant-garde, deliberately broke from traditional Murano styles to pursue a geometric and functionalist aesthetic. He notably employed a heavy, textured glass that uniquely manipulates and diffuses the light source.
Nason provided the sculptural glass artistry, pushing the boundaries of traditional Murano craft. Kalmar, with its established legacy in Viennese Modernism, provided the precise engineering and architectural framework for this elegant fixture. The lamp balances traditional craftsmanship and modernist industrial form.
