Modular Two-Panel Pendant Lamp in Murano Glass and Brass, Carlo Nason for Kalmar, 1970s.
This high-end pendant light is a striking example of Mid-Century Modern design, designed by Carlo Nason for the Austrian firm Kalmar in the 1970s.
The lamp’s conical shade is formed by two large, modular panels of hand-blown Murano glass. It features a distinct two-tone coloring: a moss-green top fading into a clear, textured bottom. Nason (b. 1935), an avant-garde figure of the era, deliberately used the coarse 'Ice Glass' (Vetro Ghiaccio) to achieve a tactile, diffused light quality, breaking from traditional Murano polish to pursue a more geometric and functionalist aesthetic.
Nason provided the sculptural glass artistry, pushing the boundaries of traditional Murano craft. Kalmar, with its established legacy in Viennese Modernism, provided the precise engineering and architectural framework for this elegant fixture. The lamp balances traditional craftsmanship and modernist industrial form.
