Rico and Rosemarie Baltensweiler L1 Guggerli Table Lamp, Switzerland, 1964

Regular price €850,00
Description

The L1 Guggerli table lamp, designed by Rico and Rosemarie Baltensweiler in 1964, is a notable example of Swiss functionalist design from the Space Age. The fixture consists of a cylindrical ABS plastic body that serves as both a structural support and a visual shroud for a hand-blown glass globe. The sandblasted glass sphere rests loosely on internal invaginations within the tube, allowing it to be manually rotated to adjust the direction and intensity of the light. This specific model features a graduated transparency in the glass, which creates depth and a diffused atmospheric glow when illuminated.

Husband-and-wife duo Rico (1920–1987) and Rosemarie (1930–2020) Baltensweiler founded their independent laboratory in Lucerne in 1951, becoming central figures in Swiss modernism. The "Guggerli" (Swiss German for "little peeker") exemplifies their "no-nonsense" engineering philosophy, where every component, including the discreet vertical cable slot at the rear, serves a clear functional purpose while maintaining a minimalist silhouette.

Suited to placement on a sideboard or bedside table where its sculptural form and adjustable light can be utilized.

Vintage condition. Please note: The opal glass sphere has a hairline crack at the bottom, though this does not affect the lamp's structural integrity or function.
